This airport does not operate as a hub for any airline jets. Many inter-island flights are available daily. Delta Air Lines, American, and United Airlines, all operate Boeing 757s and Boeing 737s among mainland and Lihue regions. WestJet and Alaska Airlines run Boeing 737-800s between Lihue and all local destinations in the mainland area. Hawaiian Airlines, on the other hand, uses Boeing 717s for its routes with all local islands to Kahului, Kona, Honolulu. The Southwest Airlines operates with Boeing 737-800 for inter-island trips to Honolulu.

Furthermore, United Airlines operates both 757s and 737-800s to deliver service to its mainland. The Hawaiian Airlines serves Lihue Airport with A321neo to Los Angeles and Oakland. Together with its regional jet service.

The airport mostly has no walls and operates an open-air service. The airport check-in is outside. The airport is the main gateway to Kauai for passengers (a majority of whom are tourists).

Capacity

The airport covers 915 acres (370 ha) at an elevation of 153 feet above the sea level. It has two asphalt runways designated 3/21 and 17/35, all measured at 6,500 by 150 feet. Lihue airport has one helipad measured at 64 by 64 feet.

For throughout one year-end of December 2017, the airport had 129,572 aircraft operations, on the medium of 355 daily. 2% military, 60% airline, 16% general aviation, and 22% scheduled commercial. Background And Socio-Economic Influence

In 1946 the Territorial Department of Public Works suggested constructing a Class III Airport at Lihue. The proposed airport would be of service to the entire Kauai with a population of about 33,878 from July 1, 1946, besides being the central spot of activity on the island, Lihue was the closest area to Oahu, and the suggested airport position was conducive for aeronautical considerations and construction.

Approximately 196 round-trips were made from Honolulu each month and a total of about 2,352 round trips yearly. This port was planned and improved as the primary Kauai airport before the years of the construction of the DC-3 or comparable planes. Although satisfactory for lighter planes, Port Allen Airport could not be improved sufficiently to accommodate unrestricted massive aircraft operation.
